Finding Data Files and Directories

When Investigator is installed, it automatically finds all the directories that contain data files on all of your installed hard disks. You can have Investigator perform this search again by selecting the Special…Data Types…Find Data Directories menu selection. A dialog box will appear asking you to confirm the fact that you want to have Investigator search for these files. If you answer yes to the dialog box, Investigator will erase all of your old data type and directory information. If this worries you, answer no and change your data type and directory information manually. If you answer yes, Investigator starts the search of your hard disk(s), informing you of the current directory that it is testing for data files. When the test is complete, if you have more than one data type, the preferred data type dialog box appears. Next appears a dialog box informing you that Investigator will review the data type and directory information that it found. For more information on this dialog box, see the change your data type and directory information help selection (You can also later view and change this information by selecting the Special…Data Types…Change Data Directory Information menu selection.)
