Charts can be opened by selecting Open from the File menu.
They can also be opened by clicking in the Open File toolbar icon if the icon appears on the toolbar.
Either method will bring up the Open File dialog box.
The box on the left hand side shows the directories on your computer that contain your files with quote information. The box on the right hand side shows the individual files represented by their ticker symbol. (If you don't know which company, bond, future, etc., a ticker symbol represents, you can use Investigator's ticker symbol lookup feature.) You can view the files that are in a different directory by clicking on that directory name in the left hand box.
To select files to open, you can:
1. Scroll down the file list until you see the files you wish to open. Single click on the file names and then click OK.
2. Scroll down the file list until you see the file you wish to open. Double click on the file name.
3. Click on the Enter Symbol button. The enter symbol dialog box will appear. Enter in the symbol of the chart you wish to open and click OK. This method is especially useful if you have lots of files in a particular directory and you don’t want to have to scroll down a long list to find the particular symbol you want. Note: the symbol must be in the selected directory. Investigator will not find it if it is in another directory. After highlighting the desired symbols, click OK.
If the directories or files you wish to open do not appear in the Open File dialog box, there are two possible causes:
1. You have more than one data type on your computer and you currently have a data type selected that does not have the files you wish. You can fix this by changing data types.
2. You do not have the data type or directory currently entered into your data directory information . You can fix this by changing your data directory information.
The chart(s) will then open and be displayed on your screen with the current bar highlighted on the right hand side of the chart, or you will receive an error message telling you why the chart cannot be opened. The ticker symbol associated with the chart will appear in the title bar. If there are bad quotes in the file, you will be notified and asked if you wish to receive more bad quote information. If you select yes and there are more bad quotes, another message box will appear displaying the bad quote information, and once again you can decide if you wish Investigator to keep informing you of bad quotes. If you select no, the chart will open regardless of further bad quote information.
